Do You Know What’s In Your Drinking Water?

Published on September 28th, 2019

The act of going to the kitchen to fill up your water bottle is pretty mindless. We take for granted the idea that our drinking water is clean and won’t cause any damaging effects on our health. However, there is a new study from the Environmental Working Group (EWG) that reveals toxic pollutants in U.S. drinking water, with the potential to lead to cancer. Here’s what our plumbers near Lincoln Park want you to know.

EWG Findings

The study examined pollutants in water from 2010-2017. The results of the study may shock you; 22 carcinogenic contaminants were found nationwide in drinking water. According to the findings, the researchers estimate that this contaminated drinking water could result in about 100,000 cases of cancer over a 70-year period.

List of Carcinogens

Examples of carcinogenic contaminants found in drinking water include arsenic, disinfection byproducts, and radioactive contaminants such as radium and uranium.

The kicker? All concentrations of contaminants are legal and receive a passing grade from the federal government.

Small Groundwater Systems at Risk

The analysis of the study points to small groundwater systems as being the highest risk of containing contaminants because they lack the resources and funding. However, it’s important to note that bigger water systems are also at risk.

What You Can Do

Researching your local water reports can help provide you with more information about specific pollutant levels. Investing in a simple water filter can help significantly reduce contaminant levels.
