WHAT IS A SEWER CLOG?

A main sewer drain clog is a type of obstruction in a sewer line. Obstruction occurs when materials, such as grease, paper towels, and other particles, build up inside the sewer main and restrict water from flowing through it properly.

People often have a clogged sewer line because they’re disposing of items down the drain that do not break down easily and cause blockages.

You may have a clogged sewer line if you notice the following:

  • Gurgling noise coming from the drains in several plumbing fixtures
  • An unpleasant smell near your drains, like raw sewage or human waste
  • Backup sewer water in the drain of your toilet, sink, or drains
  • Unusual water levels near your floor drains
  • High water in the basement floor drain

Don’t ignore signs of sewer clog, professional plumbers have non-invasive tools like a power rodding machine or hydro jetter that can clear a clog. If you wait it could lead to costly excavation and repairs!

If you suspect a clog, call Rescue Plumbing today (773) 799-8848!

Clogged sewer line is a serious plumbing issue that can leave all your drains with raw sewage backing up. Leaving you unable to utilize any plumbing fixture in the home.

Sewer backup is a huge plumbing issue, no one wants to deal with!

Here are some of the causes of sewer drain clogs so you know what to look for:

Tree Roots

Tree roots can enter the sewer line through openings and tiny cracks in sewer line.

Here in the Chicagoland area, many sewers are built from clay. Most of those sewers were built in 2-4 ft pieces.

Roots usually infiltrate your sewer system where these pieces of pipe connect.

Tree roots can wrap around the sewage pipe creating tiny cracks and breaks on the line. Broken sewer lines can stop the flow of sewage causing a sewer back up.

Broken Sewer Line

A sewer line that is cracked and/or collapsed can obstruct raw sewage to flow through into the septic system.

All the waste will build up until eventually, it is backing up into your home drains.

Grease buildup in the sewer lines

Grease often solidifies inside of a pipe, and when it hardens and cools, can form clogs that stop water from flowing through the pipes.

If grease sits in one place too long, it starts to build up because fats and oils don’t combine with other things very easily.

If this occurs it can leave you with a clogged sewer drain.

Knowing what causes the clog in your sewer drain is essential. But learning how to avoid it is also vital.

Clogged sewer drain can prevent you from using multiple plumbing fixtures in your entire house.

Knowing how to avoid a clogged sewer line could save you a lot of time and money.

Sewer Line Cleanout

Clogged drains in the sewer main are far and few once you’ve installed a cleanout.

Sewer line cleanout provides access to the sewer main, as well as having a cleanout line that helps remove build up.

Materials in Drain Lines

The most common issue in the main sewer drain line are the type of materials consumers put into their drains.

Feminine hygiene products, wipes, a lot of toilet paper, and other heavy-duty waste materials do not belong in the toilet. Flushing these can cause a serious problem in the mainline.

The type of food you put into your garbage disposal can cause a main sewer line clog.

Also, avoid putting grease in the kitchen sink drain. Grease is known to build up leaving you with a blocked sewer line.

Similar to how you take care of yourself, you need to do the same for your home or property.

Over time things can go wrong especially if left unchecked.

Avoid waiting for things to go wrong and make sure you know what condition the main sewer line is in.

You can keep up some maintenance on your own like:

  • Pour boiling water or hot water in the clogged drain
  • Baking soda and vinegar in any clogged drains
  • Use auger or drain snake (can be found at a local hardware store) in the toilet, if you notice water in toilet rises or toilet water backing up into the sink closest or shower drain
  • Avoid using drain cleaning liquids or gel in your drains. Drain cleaner is known to damage pipes and drains.

Hiring someone who has all of the necessary tools and materials, as well as a good understanding of your plumbing system, is critical!

A licensed plumber can diagnose any issues with your sewer main drain and repair it without making the problem worse.

Camera Inspection

Camera inspection of the main sewer line is done with an advanced camera that can fit into a drain and record the issue(s) causing blockages.

Hydro Jet

A Hydro jet is used to clear a clogged drain in the sewer line by using high-pressure water to break apart and remove buildup.

Power Rod

A Power rod is a heavy-duty drain snake that can clear the main sewer system and other drains.

The access point of the kitchen sink, bathroom sink, or toilet can be used for the power rod to clear any debris or build-up that has the main sewer line blocked.
