How to Unclog a Kitchen Sink Drain

Here are a few things you can do to try to unclog your kitchen sink before calling a plumber.

use bucket to remove standing water

Step 1: Clear the Drain and Disposal

The first thing you should do is check to see whether the clog is in the drain or in the garbage disposal. Remove as much standing water as possible for a better view.

Clear the top part of the drain from any debris. A wet dry vacuum and paper towels should be good to clear the sink and trap water. If you have a garbage disposal, turn it on to clear any blockages. Note: Never reach into the garbage disposal without first unplugging the unit.

Take the extra step of placing a bucket underneath the kitchen sink. Just in case the clog causes a leak.

Step 2: Boiling Water Method

The boiling water method is when you pour boiling water down the kitchen sink drain to try to dissolve the clog. This method usually only works with a small clog as it will loosen up any debris or grease.

You can also try using a plunger. Place the plunger over the kitchen sink drain and plunge up and down. The pressure from the plunger should push and pull the food debris loose.

Step 3: Baking Soda and Vinegar

One last natural alternative is baking soda and vinegar. Pour half a cup of baking soda down the clogged drain and then pour one cup of white vinegar over it.

Let the baking soda and vinegar mixture sit in the drain for a couple of minutes. This method creates a chemical reaction that will help to dissolve the clog. Then follow up with boiled water.

Step 4: Call the Professionals

If none of these methods worked it is time to call a local plumber for help. Here at Rescue Plumbing, we have the right tools and experience to take care of a clogged drain. Call our clog experts today (773) 799-8848!

How to Prevent a Clogged Kitchen Sink

Keep your sink safe from clogs and damage. Here are some ways you can prevent a clogged sink:

Starchy foods can create a clog in sink

Careful Disposal of Grease and Food Particles

When washing dishes, keep a garbage can close by to dispose of food scraps. Remember, the garbage disposal is only meant to dispose of small items.

Do not dump grease or oils down the drain. Grease will not dissolve and will only build up in the p trap once it cools down. Instead, let it cool and dispose of it in the garbage.

Proper Use of the Garbage Disposal

You should only use garbage disposals for small items and those that are easy to break apart. Cut up large items into smaller pieces before putting them down at their disposal.

Do not put fibrous foods like celery, corn husks, and artichokes in the garbage disposal. They will wrap around the blades and cause clogs.

Avoid Frequent Use of Drain Cleaner

Avoid using drain cleaner. Drain cleaners contain harsh chemicals that will deteriorate the pipes. This will make your pipes more prone to leaks and clogs.

Instead, you can use a plumber’s snake to break down the clog. Careful when using this type of machinery, you can risk creating more damage to your drains.

Instead, clean your kitchen sink drain with the help of a professional plumber. Here at Rescue Plumbing, we have the right tools to keep up with drain maintenance. Call our friendly staff today(773) 799-8848!

Clogged Kitchen Sink Drain in Lakeview

Our customer called from the Lakeview neighborhood complaining about a clogged kitchen sink. We headed out early Saturday in the Lakeview neighborhood of Chicago right on Belmont Ave.

Lakeview is a neighborhood in Chicago that is known for its historic homes and buildings. Wrigley Field, the home of the Chicago Cubs, is in the center of Lakeview.

The neighborhood where this kitchen clog occurred is full of rehabbed homes. Many of these homes were built in the early 1900s and have since been updated with modern amenities. Unfortunately, this means many of these older homes have outdated plumbing systems within the walls.

Limited Access to Clogged Kitchen Sink

When the customer called they explained they had a clogged kitchen sink. They tried every trick in the book from hot water to baking soda and couldn’t get rid of the pesky clog.

The double sink now had standing water. The customer wanted to get back to cleaning their dirty dishes. So we sent out our team immediately!

This home had been rehabbed like other homes in the Lakeview neighborhood. Unfortunately, while the fixtures are updated, the internal pipes aren’t.

In this situation, the pipes were totally rusted shut. This made drain cleaning inaccessible from underneath the kitchen sink.

Another Successful Plumbing Repair

We opened the wall behind the kitchen for better access. Then we removed the rusted drain pipe. This allowed us to use the plumber’s snake power rod in the kitchen line and remove the blockage.

Power rodding is a method of drain cleaning that uses a motor to push a cable through the drain pipe. This machine has a coiled spiral snake that forms a hook that will attach to any clog and break it up.

Chicago plumbers fix clog

This method is often used to clear clogs in kitchen sinks. It is like a plumber’s snake but much more powerful.

Once we relieved the blockage, we replaced the rusted and damaged pipe with new piping. We closed off the wall with plastic panels.

We took the extra step to check the garbage disposal and p-trap for any other blockages near the sink area.

Our team always double-checks that the plumbing problem is solved! For this Lakeview homeowner, we got their drains back up and running in no time.

FAQs

The best way to unclog a sink is with a drain cleaning machine.

You use a drain cleaning machine to unclog a sink that will not drain.

The reason your kitchen sink is backing up is that there is something down the kitchen sink drain that is not supposed to be there and caused a blockage. The blockage lets no water to the sewer. If water is used when there is a blockage in the kitchen sink line it will cause the kitchen sink to back up because the water has nowhere to go but back up.

You unclog a sink with standing water with a wet-dry shop vacuum and a drain cleaning machine.
