Signs of Leaking Pipes

A leaky pipe is when water comes out of a pipe via a hole or when fittings are not sealed.

Oftentimes leakage is not visible until the water damage becomes severe. In other cases, you may have pinhole leaks that are so small you will not notice them.

If you have a leak, you can temporarily fix it by using epoxy or plumbers tape. You can find these materials at your local hardware store.

Here are some things you can look out for to determine if you have a leak:

Wet Spots on the Ground or Walls

If you see wet spots or stains on the walls, it may be a sign of leaking pipes. Small leaks often create these wet spots and stains.

Over time, the stain or spots will damage the wall. Get ahead of the problem and complete repairs immediately.

Visible Mold or Mildew

If you see mold or mildew growing on a wall, it may be a sign the pipes behind the wall are leaking. The humidity from water dripping will make the mold and mildew grow larger.

Mold is a health hazard. It’s important to clean up any mold you see as soon as possible and treat it properly to prevent future growth. This also includes finding and repairing the leaking pipe.

Leak Sounds

Water pipe leakages can be difficult to detect but often produce distinctive sounds. Dripping sounds to look out for are hissing, gurgling, or water rushing, you most likely have a leak.

These sounds are generated when a hole or lose joint is present in a metal or plastic pipe.

A Running Meter

A running meter and high water bill are indicators of a pipe leaking in your home. This means you’re losing water and money. It’s important to find and fix the broken pipe as soon as possible.

Call Rescue Plumbing for a leak inspection (773) 799-8848. We will run a diagnostic and find the source of the problem. In no time, we will have the pipes repaired.

How to Prevent Water Leaks

Dealing with a leaking pipe is such a hassle let alone replacing the pipe for repairs. But here are some things you can do to avoid a leak from happening in the first place.

Damaged shut off valve and copper pipes

Tip 1: Keep Your Home Warm During the Winter

Pipe leakage can be a major problem, during the winter months. When temperatures drop your pipes can freeze and burst.

By keeping your pipes warm, you can prevent a pipe burst. Make sure pipe insulation is in good condition and installed. Also, make sure to set your thermostat to the heater setting.

Tip 2: Check Water Pressure and Water Meter

To identify a broken pipe, you should check your water pressure and your water meter. By doing so, you can catch a small leak or leaky joint before they become too serious.

If you notice a sudden spike in your water bill, it could be a sign of a leaking pipe. Likewise, if the water pressure seems low, it could be a leak.

Tip 3: Regular Inspections and Immediate Repairs

Have regular inspections to prevent leakage. Inspect your pipes for any pressure points or cracks. Also, ensure that the pipe connections and couplings appear sealed and caulked.

If you find an exposed leak, you can apply epoxy putty or plumber’s tape as a temporary fix while you wait for a plumber. Fixes like applying epoxy putty or plumber’s tape are temporary repairs.

You can also take the extra step of checking the water pressure and water meter. If you are unsure how to measure these characteristics you can call us and we can be of help.

Leaking Pipe and Shut-off Box

Upon arrival, the customer directed us to the spraying water on the ceiling. The first step was to run a diagnostic to find the source of the problem and to find any other undetected leaks.

When we run diagnostic we have a device that detects any extra leaks. We located a second leak coming from the refrigerator shut-off box.

To fix the leaking pipes, we first went to turn off the main water supply. This would ensure that no more water would flow from broken pipes and cause further damage.

While you wait for a plumber’s helper turn off the main water valve. In more manageable cases you can apply a plumber’s tape over the leak. Stopping the water leakage can prevent water damage.

Leaky Pipe Repairs

The joints or fittings where the pipes connected to one another were not sealed. This had caused the leaks. This meant we would have to replace the pipes.

We cut the damaged section of pipes that had a loose fitting. We explained we would replace the copper piping with new pipes.

Cutting out the damaged pipes and replacing them with new ones would be a more permanent fix instead of rubber pipe connectors.

From there, we soldered and sealed the joints to prevent any future leaks.

For the refrigerator shut-off box, we also cut the wall surrounding the box. A previous plumber did not seal the connections and the shutoff valve.

After cutting the pipes we replaced them and the shutoff with new copper piping. This would be a more permanent repair since the valve and other pipes would be completely new.

The customer’s next step is to find a drywall repair company. They will patch up the walls with drywall and paint the area.

The customer was happy with the work and we went on our way.
